Granny’s Lemons

Granny's Lemons

Granny’s Lemons

Granny’s eyes were failing,
Her head was foggy too,
When Spring came we went driving,
She stared out at the view.

The murmur of the engine,
The rattles & the hums,
The sunshine warming Granny’s face,
As Granny twiddled thumbs.

At some point on the journey,
Granny’s eyes would close,
Her head drooped, nodding gently,
The odd snore from her nose.

We pulled up on the roadside,
So I could check my map,
I felt a little sorry
Disturbing Granny’s nap.

Granny woke up with a start,
she flung her old head back,
Clutched her hanky to her heart,
Her loose teeth gave a clack.

“Oooh have we stopped for ice cream?”
It’s, ok Granny, no,
We’ll stop off at the local shops,
It’s pancake day, you know!

I need some flour and lemons,
I might get some fresh cream,
You close your eyes, dear Granny,
And carry on your dream.

I smiled in reassurance,
And clasped her wrinkled hand,
As Granny looked back puzzled,
At the stop off I had planned,

“You don’t need any lemons dear,
There’s plenty, can’t you see?
Just pop some in your pocket!”
She beamed at me with glee!

She nudged me with her elbow
Her cheeks a rosy glow,
Beside us crowds of daffodils
All standing in a row!

7th March 2019

I really don’t know how ideas enter into my psyche sometimes, after inspiration has set in. This was one of those occasions..the row of daffodils in the lane, as you walk out of the village, being my inspiration today. If you just squint your eyes a little…

Lemon-coloured daffodils are so bright & refreshing to see. I loved the rhymes in this (and granny’s first thought when she woke was for ice-cream!)
    xx

Ahh yes, it’s so lovely to see the daffodils brightening up everywhere, when there aren’t too many bright colours to see during winter. Many thanks for your lovely comments, Caz. My Granny always seemed “old” & she loved ice-cream, probably because she didn’t need her teeth in to eat it! ? xx

I saw Granny almost lose that top set then! Fabulous.

    1. Debbie Jones says:

Haha! Thank you, Peter! My Granny used to lose hers, often, although usually she didn’t put them in, in the first place! ?
