Three Sisters

Three Sisters

Three Sisters

There once were three sisters,
Three sisters, yes, three!
Their lives, fun and blissful,
Delightful, carefree.

Each day they would dance,
They would prance in the wood,
The wild joy of innocence,
Of charming childhood.

Their souls were heard singing,
Their hearts running free,
Their nature, adoring,
Just how it should be.

But out of the depths,
One strange day they would see,
A gnarled, crooked man
On the stump of a tree.

He beckoned them over,
A wry, cunning grin
Distorted his lips,
Where his clay pipe slipped in.

The sisters stood, mystified,
Gazed at each other,
Held hands, gulping, pensively
And wished for their mother.

He told the three sisters
They’d come to no harm,
He appeared to pure beauty,
No cause for alarm.

“You love my fine forest,
Playing each sunny hour,
Bringing life to my darkness,
Sparking paths with your power.

Just think of the magic,
If there is such a way,
For you, dear three sisters,
To stay here and play,

Jumping the toadstools,
Charming the birds,
Chasing the butterflies,
Chanting your words!”

The youngsters were smiling,
And filled with fresh glee,
That this kind curiosity,
Should help sisters three.

Nodding heads in agreement,
Their eyes shining bright,
The man waved his hands,
As the day turned to night!

Nobody knew what occurred,
What went wrong,
That the three, precious treasures
Had sung their last song!

Where once stood the cherubs,
Where once there were three,
The man cruelly smirked,
Thrice, he patted each tree.

Slinking off slowly,
Into the void,
Glancing back, smugly,
At what he’d deployed.

Once more, he’d avenged
For the woodcutter’s blame,
But this time; his daughters,
The man felt no shame!

And there were three sisters,
Still standing in line,
Waving their boughs,
As he scoffed, “Now you’re mine!”

Whilst walking in the local woods, a few weeks ago, I noticed that the trunks of three trees, overlooking the path, were almost identical. They stood there together, in a group a little away from the trees around them, with perfect spacing..it was like they were related in some way. The idea of them being three sisters & how they got there was hatched…

Enchanting and enchanted. There are such trees all over the world and I’m sure they lead wondrous lives, see amazing things, and laugh together in the breeze.
